LOCAL CRAFT: CAFÉS INDIEN.

Nice's finest crafted coffee…

There’s a corner of Nice’s old town where the delicious aroma of freshly roasted artisanal coffee wafts into the narrow streets. Cafés Indien is the go-to spot for coffee culture, where discerning aficionados can buy the best sustainably grown, single-origin beans or a carefully crafted espresso or pour-over to drink. It also supplies coffee to our very own café on the port.

Cafés Indien began roasting and brewing in Nice in 1925, and has been run by three generations of the same family since 1975. In recent years, they’ve placed more and more emphasis on traceability, developing links with farmers and selecting the best hand-picked beans to roast and sell.

Coffee originates from near Yemen on the Arabian peninsula but, says current master-roaster Jean-François Torre, his favourite comes from the “cradle of coffee”, Ethiopia. Being only 40 kilometres from Italy, customer expectations are high. However, he prefers his espresso a little lighter than the dark and sometimes bitter Italian style, and that’s the Cafés Indien roast.
Coffee culture is growing fast in France, Jean-François says. “So much the better: that guarantees quality and fair pay for farmers, and is making lousy coffees a thing of the past.”
